From
December 8, 2023, wine producers in the
European Union are required to provide nutritional information and a list of ingredients on their product labels, in compliance with
Regulation (EU) 2021/2117. This
regulation aims to ensure greater transparency for consumers regarding the content of wines.
When nutritional values must be indicated
The
requirement to indicate
nutritional values applies to all wines marketed in the
EU or intended for export. However, it is possible to indicate only the energy value (calories) directly on the label, while other
nutritional information can be provided via an
electronic label, for example, using a
QR code.
What information to include
Nutritional information must include:
- Energy value (expressed in kJ and kcal)
- Fats
- Saturated fatty acids
- Carbohydrates
- Sugars
- Proteins
- Salt
However, for
wines, it is mandatory to display only the
energy value on the
physical label. The other information can be provided via a
QR code linking to a dedicated web page.
Where and how to display them
The
energy value must be indicated in the same visual field as the other
mandatory information on the label. If a
QR code is used to provide additional nutritional details and the list of ingredients, it must be placed in a
visible position and accompanied by the wording "
Ingredients and nutritional values".
QR codes and digitalization
The use of
QR codes allows producers to provide detailed information without overcrowding the
physical label. This approach facilitates data updates and gives consumers immediate access to the wine’s nutritional information and ingredients.
How to avoid penalties with a compliant label
To
comply with regulations and avoid penalties, producers must:
- Clearly indicate the energy value on the physical label.
- Provide the full list of ingredients and additional nutritional information via a QR code or directly on the label.
- Ensure that all information is easily accessible and understandable for consumers.
Adopting these measures not only ensures compliance with
EU regulations but also strengthens consumer trust by offering transparency and clarity on the product’s characteristics.
